Calculation assumptions
  • Minor renovation band; updating selected surfaces and fixtures.
  • 50 × selected cosmetic rate. Typical is the arithmetic midpoint, not a measured average.
  • National Estimate. Actual labor and material costs vary significantly by location. High is a planning figure, not a price ceiling.
  • Scope-note fields are retained in your summary but do not apply unverified price adjustments.
Main cost drivers
  • Floor area and remodel level drive the estimate.
  • Moving plumbing fixtures usually increases cost significantly.
  • Custom fixtures, tile details and concealed damage can change the scope.

UNDERSTAND YOUR ESTIMATE

How this calculator works

Bathroom floor area is multiplied by the chosen remodel-level range. Cosmetic maps to minor renovation; mid-range maps to partial remodeling. Scope selections help prepare a contractor brief, but they do not add separate prices to the already bundled remodel rate.

Major factors affecting the result

  • Floor area and remodel level drive the estimate.
  • Moving plumbing fixtures usually increases cost significantly.
  • Custom fixtures, tile details and concealed damage can change the scope.
A WORKED EXAMPLE

Put the numbers in context

A 50 sq ft cosmetic renovation: 50 × $100–$150 = $5,000–$7,500. The midpoint planning figure is $6,250.

What is not included

No itemized allocation for demolition, fixtures, tile, flooring, plumbing, electrical, labor or finishes. These require a scope-specific quote; they must not be inferred as percentages.

When to get a professional quote

Use the result to organize your questions and compare the same scope across written quotes. Confirm inclusions, exclusions and site conditions with the person doing the work. For structural, electrical, HVAC or tree-hazard decisions, consult a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Does selecting a new vanity add a separate charge?

No. It records the work you want. The overall scope rate may include fixture changes, and separate additions could count the same work twice.

Can this estimate hidden water damage?

No. Inspection and, sometimes, opening up the affected area are needed before a contractor can price repairs.

Data sources & methodology

Last reviewed: September 2026.

Low and high use the linked published ranges. Typical is the arithmetic midpoint only when both bounds are closed. If a source prints an upper value with “+”, Typical is not calculated. No regional, material-quality or difficulty multiplier is applied. Source ranges may describe different scopes and should not be treated as guarantees.

Cosmetic

$100$150 per sq ft · HomeGuide cost guide

Minor renovation band; updating selected surfaces and fixtures.

Published June 20, 2025 · Accessed September 16, 2026 · Typical: derived midpoint

Mid-range

$150$300 per sq ft · HomeGuide cost guide

Mapped to the source partial remodel band; does not mean premium finishes.

Published June 20, 2025 · Accessed September 16, 2026 · Typical: derived midpoint

Full remodel

$250$500 per sq ft · HomeGuide cost guide

Full remodel band; costs may exceed the guide. Line items are bundled, not additive.

Published June 20, 2025 · Accessed September 16, 2026 · Typical: derived midpoint

Itemized charges without a verified, non-overlapping basis remain unpriced. “Quote needed” does not mean free. An installed baseline is never silently split into invented cost percentages.
