How this calculator works
Regular studs = ceiling(wall length in inches ÷ spacing) + 1. Add four studs per opening (two king and two jack allowances) and two extra per corner. This conservative takeoff does not subtract studs where openings occur. Purchase quantity = ceiling(total studs × (1 + waste ÷ 100)).
Major factors affecting the result
- Spacing and wall length control the regular stud count.
- Opening and corner quantities add explicit purchasing allowances.
- One bottom plate and two top plates use three times the wall length.
Put the numbers in context
20 ft at 16 in centers: ceil(240 ÷ 16) + 1 = 16 regular studs. One opening adds 4, giving 20. With 10% waste, buy 22. Plate allowance is 60 linear ft.
What is not included
Headers, sills, cripples, blocking, connectors, sheathing and structural design. Lumber length uses the entered wall height as a stock allowance, not a cut length; plate thickness is not deducted. Confirm a detailed framing plan before ordering.
